A Super-Virus Pandemic: It’s Only a Matter of Time

News about the spreading Coronavirus born in China had my heart skipping a beat. For some reason it reached dark hidden-fears inside of me that I didn’t even know existed. Maybe I’ve just been reading too many Stephen King books lately. Like “The Stand” where a man-made virus escapes into the population nearly wiping out our species. Or maybe because today, a world-wide pandemic could be just a matter of time?

After all, highly contagious runaway super-virus’ have happened many times in our past history and history does have a way of repeating itself. And today’s more adaptive diseases have new and evolving mutating powers which make them more deadlier than ever before.

As of this post date, the Coronavirus death toll is relatively small and limited (so far) to China, the country where the disease was born. Unlike the 2003 SARS outbreak that quickly spread to more than two dozen countries in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia before it was contained. That (again?) was a China born virus, infecting over 8,000 people and killing almost 800 reportedly in 37 different countries.

Yet these are small potatoes compared to plagues of yore. The worst being the Black Plague or Bubonic plague — killing some 75 million world wide from 1330 to 1700.

Yes we are much more prepared to handle virus outbreaks today. Past experience and modern medical technologies have us well equipped — so the World Health Organization (WHO) likes us to believe. But contagious diseases also have benefited from our technologies. Air travel can send an infected person to the other side of the world in a matter of hours. Or many infected to multiple countries in a blink of an eye.

Even more concerning is that modern virus diseases are mostly immune to current medications, having evolved resistance and adaptability in their mutations. Vaccines for these new virus-based outbreaks are nonexistent and would take years of study and testing to become available. So yes it’s scary when a new super-virus begins to spread in a country it was born. — And even scarier, when it escapes globally!

Canadian news today had our Countries Health Care representative’s on, trying their best to soothe our concerns by telling us how ready and prepared they were. That they were monitoring the situation and hospitals here have been briefed and are ready. Ready? What, we’re ready when it gets here? What if anything are we doing to prevent it from getting here? Shouldn’t our borders be closed to those from the infected countries? At least until the virus is well contained you’d think?

Am I the only one feeling these concerns? Oh they got airports scanning for fevers and request you fill out forms stating if you’ve been feeling ill lately. Big hairy deal! You think people are going to volunteer that information risking non-entry? And fever doesn’t indicate whether you’re a carrier or not.

With all the talk about how our hospitals are ready and the paltry precautions their taking at the airports, isn’t that an indication that even they believe that yes, soon enough, the virus WILL BE HERE!

Is it only a matter of time that a Stephen King-like world-wide pandemic scenario plays out for real? Will one day, another Black Plague be born, sweeping death uncontrollably across our planet?

What about you? Are you concerned about future runaway plagues?

Shouldn’t we be doing more at first signs of an outbreak? Like quarantining the entire country immediately?

What do you Think?

    1. Thank you so much for sharing. I appreciate your comment in return. So, why do government leaders constantly worry that “Telling the whole Truth” during a crisis will somehow lead the public into mass panic? Does history prove this is so? Or is it that they are afraid of being scrutinized for their part in not doing due diligence to protect us from it in the first place?

I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of our leaders always thinking about themselves and the effects on them. They constantly manipulate the truth on grounds that its done in the public’s interest. That frankly, is bullshit! Thanks again for your comment Mr. Stearley — hope to hear from you again!

      1. I think part of it is the public panic. The other part is they have a financial motive not to disrupt business as usual. The CDC is presented to us as the god of all knowledge and wisdom on disease. Yet we discover that board members also sit on the boards of major pharmaceutical companies. And last time I unearthed this, the members in question were on the boards of companies making the vaccines. The CDC totally blew it on the spread of HIV, ensuring a large percentage of hemophiliacs receiving pooled plasma products would become infected. They also blew it on the spread of Zika and they even started to screw up on this cononavirus by announcing it could not spread while the patients were unsymptomatic. The Chinese government corrected them the very next day on that one. Most of the “whys” can answered by following the money, sadly.

        1. Well stated! The limitless wealth (thus power) of today’s super-giant corporations has allowed them infiltration into high impactful positions throughout the world. There, and sadly so, they fight for what’s best for their company’s bottom line and could care less about the public’s best interests. Those with the greatest wealth have always ruled over the rest of us yet today it seems to be on a level unprecedented in modern societal times. Money may just be — the root of all evil!
