The Shocking Truth About Reality

“What is Real? How do you define ‘real?’ If your talking about what you feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then ‘real’ is simply electrical signals interpreted by our brain.” — Morpheus (the Matrix)

“Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” – Albert Einstein

REALITY?

So what is YOUR reality? Is it the YOU who likes chocolate, old movies and works 9 – 5 to help support a family? Maybe you work in an office, or are a cab driver, or factory worker who enjoys watching the soccer game with his buddies down at the local pub. — Yet Is this true reality?

What if we strip away these perceptions you have of YOU and look deeper and beyond.

Now what do you see? How about a YOU who is just one of 7.5 billion others of a species known as Homo Sapien. Who scurry busily over their lifetime on a thin rocky crust of an orbed planet centered by circling molten lava. Yes that’s better! But not quite there yet!

This planet your on. It’s spinning over 1,000 miles per hour and is speeding through space as it orbits a giant ball of nuclear plasma at about 67,000 miles per hour. And the sun itself is orbiting the center of our Galaxy (The Milky Way) at about 500,000 mph. And our Milky Way galaxy itself is moving at an incredible 2.3 million mph!— Feeling a little Dizzy? Well hang on, because realities ride doesn’t stop here!

In this stripped down reality, we are simply a biological organism, a sentient being related in-species to each other and to every other living thing on this planet. We are born, live out our lives and die on this one small spinning rock. One planet among billions in our galaxy and trillions in our universe.

Living out our short lives then fertilizing the future with our remains after we die. Oh My! Rather harsh you may say?  Well yes I suppose? Yet nobody said reality would be comforting. — And still, there’s more! This is just a small sampling of the differences between what we perceive as reality and what IS reality. Yet it goes much deeper than even that!

To find our hidden realities, we must first strip away a lifetime of false perceptions.

STRIPPING AWAY FALSE REALITY

To find the hidden reality we must first put aside all the misleading man-made stories that we humans so easily come to believe. The old lies and mythologies, the superstitions, the plethora of religious theologies. We must push through these old and cumbersome, self-protective and ill-gotten beliefs in order to see clearly the reality in which we live in. But this will not be easy!

“We all see only that which we are trained to see.” ― Robert Anton Wilson

We must delete the subconscious propaganda that’s been building inside of our heads since our childhood. All the influencing opinions of others telling us: This is who you are! This is how you should live your life! This is what you should believe in! And the most damaging subliminal command — This is what and how to think!

If? We could manage to scrape off this lifelong dirty film of influence, and see for the first time through a clean clear crystal lens? — What reality would we see?

WHAT WOULD WE SEE?

Perhaps? That we are simply a living breathing multi-organism made of the same stuff that all things on our planet are made of? That we are bound, born and evolutionary bred to this small blue planet spinning and hurdling through space at incredible speeds.

That we are but one? One of some 7.8 Billion alive today. One human being of current status out of some 100 billion others that have lived and died before us. Insignificant in the world population numbers today as every year on average 130 Million more of us are born each year — 360,000 each day — 15,000 each hour and roughly 4.1 each and every second.

We are but one individual of a species that sees 55 Million die each year — 151,600 each day — 6,316 each hour and nearly 2 of us die each and every second. In Reality — We are but ONE!

Or Maybe? That we live on a tiny speck, in an unimaginable vast universe that’s filled with billions and billions of other stars and planets. That we are just one being among billions of others existing within a planetary life-giving biosphere created by the laws of nature.

Simply put, we are just one of about 100 billion humans who’ve lived before us on this one small planet, spinning and hurtling through space at incredible speeds around a giant ball of fire! And this is our reality!

THE PALE BLUE DOT

Our rotating orb is just one among trillions of other planets, stars and galaxies. Our planet Earth is but one little rock, one little speck in an incomprehensible vastness of space. And seen from afar — just a lonely pale blue dot!

The following excerpt — from Carl Sagan’s book “The Pale Blue Dot” was inspired by an image taken at Sagan’s suggestion by Voyager 1, on February 14, 1990. As the spacecraft left our planetary neighborhood for the fringes of the solar system, engineers turned it around for one last look at its home planet.

Voyager 1 was about 6.4 billion kilometers (4 billion miles) away when it captured this photo of our world. Caught in the center of scattered light rays (a result of taking the picture so close to the Sun), the Earth appears as a tiny point of light, a crescent, only 0.12 pixel in size. From http://www.planetary.org.

THE PALE BLUE DOT — Excerpt: by Carl Sagan

I urge you to read this slowly and to the end while giving thought and comprehension to the words. Just for the few minutes it will take drop all of your earthly bound triviality’s and imagine the insignificance of our isolated small planet as seen here by the author the late Carl Sagan.

Look again at that dot. That’s here! That’s home! That’s us! — On it: everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there — on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturing’s, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.

The mightiest among us, the most powerful we know, are all but fleeting masters on micro-fractions of a dot. When you next have the hubris to believe you are important, that a problem you have is important, that anything you know is important, think of this dot.

It’s a pathetically small dot we inhabit, but it is also the only dot we have. Neither that dot, nor we, are nearly as majestic as we like to presume. Still, it is all we have!

STRIPPING DOWN REALITY

We are all caught up in our own day-to-day emotional irrelevancies that we call living. Each of us living inside of our own mind, our own thoughts, our own realities. Are own — who we think we are!  And then we Die! Ironically blindfolded to reality itself. A reality that is there right in front of us but we seldom see! Oh how we fool ourselves! Oh How our Brain fools ourselves!

From the plethora of deities who will take care of us, yet only if we kneel in praise. To illusions of right always besting wrong. From the preaching from so many on what “they are selling” to be the Truth! History will tell you the truth! The history of mankind, our legacy, our violent rise to the dominant species on this planet and our continued rule and destruction over each other and over our planet.

“What Darwin was too polite to say my friends, is that we came to rule the earth not because we were the smartest, or even the meanest, but because we have always been the craziest, most murderous motherfuckers in the jungle.”Stephen King

“It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn’t feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.” Neil Armstrong

THE BRAIN’S REALITY

Our brain, that somehow while floating totally in isolation, fully encased inside of a boned skull and blind with ‘no direct contact to the outside world’ directs our very lives! Receiving outside sensory data via our senses and then transmitting these findings via chemical and electrically charged input; it then builds, nay fabricates a story that we can comprehend as to enable us to navigate through the outside world.

And we go as it commands! The blind, leading the blind!

Our Brain! Reality Control

We are also bound by our biological senses and their limitations! We see only what our sensing capabilities allow and not what is really there! That is just a story our brain tells us! For we see in color! Yet color — doesn’t exist! And we hear in sound. Yet sound as we hear it — doesn’t exist! Nor does how we depict the multitudes of smells here on Earth. Yet another lie our brain is telling us!

In truth, our brain is simply an evolutionary control system that seeks out better ways to survive and reproduce and ensure the survival of the species. And nothing more! Just like all the other animal lifeforms on this planet we are all made of the same and come from the same DNA and family genome tree.

So why do we believe we are so special? Maybe? Because our brain is telling us this is so? After all, our Brain is very good at telling stories!

Alone in isolation, encased in bone in the hollow of our skull our brain fabricates reality! Makes us see colors that are not there! Hear and smell things that are not real! Interprets outside stimuli, calculates this with past experiences and formulates a directive. The rest my friends — it makes-up! Fills in the gaps to provide a continuous flow and re-makes reality inside our minds so as we can understand it.

We do not get reality! We get what our brain tells us is reality!

REALITY IS INSIDE NOT OUT

Your brain, your mind, that voice in your head that is forever prattling on either emotionally uplifting or dragging you down in despair and replaying scenes over and over in your mind; should be the clue. The proof that you need! You are living not in the outside world! But inside of your head!

The outside world doesn’t care about you or your thoughts! The universe, our sun and our planet have been here long before we were and will still be here long after we’re gone! We will, as every other Human being that has ever come before us one day cease to exist. Our atoms even in death diffusing to be re-used again in nature’s waste-not cycle. In reality our time here is limited! And the outside world couldn’t care less!

BUT WE ARE SPECIAL?

But we are different, chosen! Really? Think if you can of our construction, our human bodies stripped down to their biological functions. To survive, we eat dead animals for nourishment, then defecate and urinate-out what we don’t need just like most of the other mammals on this planet!

We kill each other over conquered territory then protect their boundaries just like many other predators on this planet do. We will fight to the death to survive! Instincts that all creatures on earth share! Special?

Strip away our superficial personalities, our emotions our personal characteristics. Disregard our outer shell, skin and hair, and see the skeleton of bone underneath with soft tissue organs below, a central nervous system and a blood pumping heart keeping everything fed and alive. We live we die. We must consume and breath like all living things!

We may find ourselves, evolutionary speaking, at the top of the food chain, the dominant species — but we are all made of the same stuff that everything else is, both on this planet and in this amazing universe that surrounds us.

Us! In Reality!

PERSPECTIVE

We have stripped away the very essence of who we think we are and tried seeing ourselves, our lives and our realities through a clearer lens. A little scary for many? A little too scary for some? To the point of disbelief for others I’m sure. — But Why?

Perhaps because we are yet not willing to accept the truth of our existence and frightened still, of our eventual demise. Death scares us and so we covet the crutch of belief that we will live on even after death. That our existence has a truer meaning and because, to think otherwise, goes against everything that we’ve been told.

Told over and over by others what to believe! Bombarded with opinions since childhood we have chosen our reality belief’s from the offerings of others. They tell us… We are special!

Our existence holds more meaning than those of all other living things!

They tell us, what reality we should see!

And the meaning of life is? — Just Listen, and they will tell you that too!

As Always — Search for the Truth!

  1. Great read! And we chase our tails because of social programing not even focusing on what is “real.” In retirement now, looking back over two careers, I find myself asking “what the hell was that all about.” Exploring the real world now – I think

    1. Thanks Harold! If only we knew then — what we know now? Though I suppose its all part of life’s journey. Still? It seems cruel that its only with age do we find the wisdom that would of benefited us most when we were young. Loved your last post Harold, a must read — Hiatus
